There’s been a lot of talk regarding travel to Cuba since the United States introduced new policy that restores diplomatic relations. But what does it really mean for someone who wants to travel to this island that has been “off-limits” for so long?
The new policy allows for only certain types of travel and does NOT include travel strictly for tourism. US citizens can legally travel to Cuba for purposes of: professional research, humanitarian projects, educational activities; or if they are participating in a sporting event or performing in a concert. While travel to Cuba is now open, it is good to keep in mind that Cuba is still not ready to receive a huge influx of visitors from the US. An article by Patrick Oppman of CNN puts it best… Cuba is really not ready to receive a huge influx of visitors, particularly from the United States. There are not enough good hotels, and infrastructure is in terrible shape. U.S. credit cards still aren't accepted in Cuba and forget about overseas roaming on your U.S. cell phone. You will most likely be taking a vacation from the Internet, too. Apart from hotels and a few dozen Cuban government "hot spots," there is very little connectivity in Cuba. Netflix may be available here now but in reality you won't be catching up on your favorite shows. If you are excited about the opportunity to visit Cuba, now may be the time to go. Click on either of the pictures below to explore some options. We’d be happy to talk to you! This week's #PickoftheWeek comes from Cheri, our administrative assistant in the office who focuses on the Travel Haus website, social media and marketing. She and her husband will be escorting this group cruise to Bermuda next May 8-15, 2016.
The Norwegian Breakaway is the newest ship from Norwegian Cruise Lines. This ship has so much to offer: starting with endless dining options, spectacular entertainment and enough activities to keep us going strong all week long! We are sure to have a great time: whether we relax along The Waterfront - an oceanfront promenade lined with restaurants, bars and stunning island views, check out the energy at 678 Ocean Place (three connecting decks of bars, dining, shopping and entertainment) or get active at the incredible Aqua Park: 5 multi-story water slides, 2 pools and hot tubs, or at the thrilling Sports Complex with rope courses and "The Plank"! I can't wait to take it all in! The cruise will take us to the beautiful island of Bermuda. We will be docked there for 2 full nights/3 days which will give us plenty of time to take in all the sights. Choose from exploring historic St. George, enjoying the beach at Horseshoe Bay (or any one of Bermuda's famous pink beaches) or spending the day roaming the markets and history of the Royal Naval Dockyard. With this Travel Haus group, we have included transportation from the Souderton area to the pier in New York (with 10 or more passengers) as well as a dinner for 2 at the Italian Specialty Restaurant, La Cucina. There is also a Norwegian special that runs until July 31st: choose 1 offer - free beverage package, free specialty dining, free wifi or excursion credit (see details here) This is also a great option for families! (I will be taking my two teenagers) There is so much for them to do onboard the ship with Splash Academy (ages 3-12) and Entourage (ages 13-17). Best of all, if you book by July 31st the 3rd and 4th passengers are FREE (just pay taxes)!! Call us to reserve your spot today! It's exciting when a new destination opens up to explore and that is what is happening for Americans who want to travel to Cuba. We received this update from the ARTA newsletter earlier this week...
"Carnival Corp.has been granted US licenses to operate direct US to Cuba cruises. Carnival aims to begin sailing from Port Miami to Cuba in May 2016 via fathom, its recently launched 'social impact' brand using the small ship Adonia. The US up until now, did not permit a cruise ship to go from the US to Cuba and return to the US. Carnival's fathom would operate cruises for the purpose of providing cultural, artistic, faith-based and humanitarian exchanges, in compliance with US rules that allow licensed travel companies to transport approved travelers to Cuba to engage in activities that support the Cuban people. Carnival is in active discussions with Cuban authorities to gain their approval. Carnival's approach is via a brand clearly established for people-to-people exchanges that complies with the types of travel newly sanctioned by the Obama administration. Carnival's fathom is to begin humanitarian-focused cruises between Miami and the Dominican Republic in April. Miami-Cuba cruises would start the following month, and week-long sailings from Miami would alternate between Cuba and the Dominican Republic over the long term. Carnival's plans underwent an extensive review by the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions, and by the Department of Commerce. The process has been under way for several months." |
