Half Day Sounion at Sunset with Wine Tasting
Friday, November 11, 2022
2:00 PM – Approx. 4 hours
$90.00 per person
A minimum of 15 passengers is needed for this tour to operate
Description:
Drive along the coastal road, past the wonderful beaches of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza to the most southern point of Attica, Cape Sounion, where the white marble pillars of the Temple of Poseidon stand. On the way you have a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf and the little islands offshore.
Arriving at the Cape Sounion, you will visit the 5th century B.C. Temple of Poseidon with its magnificent panoramic view of the Aegean Sea (on a clear day you can see at least seven islands). One of its columns has a graffiti left by none other than lord Byron in the early 1800s. Cape Sounion has long played an important part in Greek mythology and history, and the first recorded mention of it occurs in the Odyssey, as the last safe landing before Poseidon scattered the returning Greek navy. As god of the sea, Poseidon was very important for ancient Greeks, and the scale of the Temple at Cape Sounion reflects that.
After visiting the Temple, filled from the beauty, the history and the culture of this impressive archaeological site, you have time to walk at leisure on the rocky promontory of Sounion. We will wait to admire one of the most amazing sunsets you could ever imagine.
There will also be a visit of a winery for a wine tasting.
We will stop for ice cream (at your own expense) before returning to Athens.

Saturday, November 12, 2022
8:00 AM – Approx. 10 hours
$199.00 per person
A minimum of 15 passengers is needed for this tour to operate
Description:
Leave Athens and drive southwest until we reach the Corinth Canal that connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea. Our first (short) stop at the narrowing between mainland Greece and the Peloponnese is at the impressive Corinth canal. Finished in 1893 and one of the wonders of its time, learn all about its many interesting ill-fated and varied Histories, from ancient times to the present as you view the gentle flotillas of yachts traversing beneath its plunging cliff line.
After crossing into the Peloponnese, our first main stop explores the beautifully preserved remains of Ancient Corinth, one of Greece’s most powerful and influential city-states of Antiquity, where St. Paul lived and preached for two years.
Visit Corinth (Acts 18: 1-18), a city that inspired one of St. Paul's most famous letter. You will visit the Archeological Museum, the Agora (Market Place), and Temples. The remains of the city clearly show how rich and important Corinth was in Ancient Times. Walk among the ruins and stand on the Bema where Paul stood. Read Paul's letter to the Corinthians, addressing his message to the Gentiles as he began the task of establishing his church in Corinth. Acts 18:9-11 Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.” 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. A short stop at the site of the ancient port of Kehries, where St. Paul disembarked, will conclude the visit.
Next we come to the imposing remains of Ancient Mycenae, the Homeric city of the Atreides – the city “rich in gold” of the ancient poets and one of the most important sites in the development of Ancient Greece. Not only central to the ‘Mycenaean period, from 1600 to 1100 BC which formed the first major widespread civilization in Europe at the time, but also home to the palace of the legendary Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War. Passing through the 20-meter wide city walls, entering through the gigantic lion's gate and exploring Agamemnon’s throne room and associated Tombs of the site with their huge construction is an amazing experience. Excavations of its various Tombs to date have uncovered over 15Kg of gold and other famous & priceless treasures, many of which you will see in its modern on-site museum including Agamemnon's death mask and the Cyclopean Walls.
Depart for the historic port city of Nafplio by the sea through the fertile plain of Argolis, the picturesque town nestling at the foot of a cliff crowned by the mighty ramparts of the Palamidi Fortress is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. Nafplion has a definite artistic feel with enchanting narrow streets of Neoclassic & Venetian architecture, upmarket local craft & clothes shops. Its seafront is packed with cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes with views to the Venetian castle of Bourtzi in the bay. Time to wander its pretty streets, pick up a souvenir, or just relax over lunch (at your own expense)
After lunch we visit the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Asklepios, first healing centre of the Ancient World and where you will also find the impressive Theatre of Epidaurus, one of the most visited ancient sites in Greece. The temple and theatre date from the 4th century and feature masterpieces of classical Greek architecture. Join the other visitors who test its world-famous acoustics with a poem or a song before your return!
Return to Athens by the National road connecting Epidaurus with Corinth.
